The Challenge
The London Borough of Merton required specialist support to repair and protect damaged public lawns at Mitcham Fair Green as part of an ongoing regeneration project.
The lawns had suffered significant damage due to unauthorised vehicle parking during construction works, resulting in uneven surfaces and poor grass condition. Additional challenges included post-event litter accumulation and inefficient pedestrian movement across grass areas, leading to further wear.

The Solution
Grass Barbers carried out a targeted lawn restoration and advisory programme, beginning with full litter clearance following local events.
The team supplied and installed approximately 4 tonnes of high-quality topsoil, levelling damaged areas and preparing surfaces for reseeding. Grass was then carefully seeded to match existing surrounding lawns, ensuring a consistent finish.
To prevent future damage, Grass Barbers advised and supported the installation of protective parking posts, restricting vehicle access to grassed areas.
In addition, the team identified patterns of pedestrian movement across lawns and provided strategic recommendations for improved pathway design, helping guide foot traffic and reduce wear on green spaces.
The Result
Grass Barbers successfully restored the lawns to a safe, level and visually consistent condition, improving the overall appearance of Mitcham Fair Green.
Preventative measures and design recommendations helped protect the site from future damage, supporting long-term sustainability and usability of the public space while enhancing the experience for local residents.
